At the Special Olympics held at the YMCA grounds in Chennai, one could see the enthusiastic participation of differently-disabled children from at least 50 institutions. The special children, by just participating in the Olympics were defying great odds. There were children afflicted with cerebral palsy, Down’s syndrome and autism. One of the participants wore a T-shirt on which was inscribed an inspiring line: “We shall overcome”. Those three words captured the collective spirit of the people assembled there.
Children from the Madhuram Narayanan Centre for Exceptional Children participated in the games and won prizes. On January 27, 2003, former tennis player Vijay Amritraj felicitated the winners at a function held at the German Hall, Chennai.
