The company is fully committed to environment protection and has made dramatic improvements in its processes over the years by making considerable investments, within the limitations of the latest available technologies.
In the true spirit of protecting the environment, Chemplast Sanmar has taken several positive initiatives. Chemplast Sanmar has converted its manufacturing process at Mettur from Mercury cell to environment friendly Membrane cell process for producing Caustic Soda, well ahead of the mandated time period at an investment of approximately Rs. 80 crores at Mettur. It has also put in place a Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) facility at this location at an investment of Rs. 27 crores to completely recycle and reuse the liquid trade effluents generated, including solid waste, inside the plants. This breakthrough ZLD process also involves a high recurring revenue outgo of approximately Rs. 6 crore annually.
In order to eliminate any possibility of even a minor chlorine gas leak caused by tripping of the primary or backup power, the company has invested a sum of Rs. 50 lakh in the Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) system it has set up at Mettur. The resultant continuous supply of power is a fool proof method of eliminating the possibility of gas leaks.The first of its kind in the chemical industry, the system in force at Chemplast is a rarity in the global scenario.
The PVC manufacturing plant Chemplast Cuddalore Vinyls Limited, at Cuddalore is a state-of-the-art facility with technology obtained from Ineos Vinyls UK Ltd, UK, a world major in the PVC industry.
In many plants globally and in India, VCM, the raw material for PVC is unloaded through single-walled pipes. For the first time in India, the Chemplast Cuddalore Vinyls Limited, Cuddalore project has built in the extra safety feature of double- walled pipes, in addition to a host of other latest safety features. Chemplast Sanmar is the only company importing VCM at atmospheric pressure and at low temperature, which is the most advanced and safe method of transferring VCM, even though at a much higher cost.
Chemplast Sanmar has committed itself to substantial investments in all its manufacturing locations. Its “not-for-profit” investments in this respect are proactive initiatives setting an example in responsible corporate citizenship. Chemplast strongly believes that it is the moral responsibility of all stakeholders to come together and work towards a common cause - that of safeguarding the environment.
Sanmar is ruled by the Governing Principle of not discharging a single drop of treated effluent on to the land or into the sea. As a result all plants in the Group are committed to zero-liquid-discharge. Besides, the Group has invested in state-of-the-art technology to ensusre the safeguarding of the environment. The results of these efforts are visible through specific schemes and initiatives across various locations.
At Kodiakarai near Vedaranyam, in Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu, where it has its salt works, Chemplast has partnered the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) in setting up a study centre. Thousands of colourful migratory birds land at the bird sanctuary on the Vedaranyam coast between October and March every year. The BNHS-Sanmar centre is a boon for enthusiasts who gather to watch migratory birds from around the world swarming the swamps of Vedaranyam at the onset of the northeast monsoon.
