Students put up skits for their teachers

CHENNAI: The students of Madhuram Narayanan Centre for Exceptional Children put up skits for their teachers on Monday. It was their way of thanking them as well as parents for the efforts they put in to train their wards.

The programme began with awards presentation to three teachers for their contribution. Parents, trained as special educators, and the therapist, who trained the parents, were honoured. A. Pitchai, former director of the Directorate of Rehabilitation for Disabled, gave away the best teachers’ award to teachers at the centre.

The school, which has more than 100 students, lays emphasis on training parents, who later act as teachers for other students who join the school.
The centre offers a 10-month course for mothers on training children with mental retardation.
To mark Teacher’s Day, the school distributed certificates to 20 parents, including a grandmother, who took the course last year. Experts teach the basics, nature, causes and management of mental retardation. This year, 15 parents enrolled for the course.
At the hour-long programme held at the centre on G.N. Chetty Road, under a makeshift shamiana, children put up skits with their parents lending a helping hand. P. Jeyachandran, director, Vijay Human Services, urged parents to check out institutes before having children admitted.
“It is not enough for therapists to teach parents and children. World over it is not possible to have one teacher for every child but training one parent is possible.
When a parent is trained, half the battle is won,” he said.
