EVKS for uniform taxation
CHENNAI: Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry EVKS Elangovan on Friday urged Tamil Nadu to implement the Uniform Taxation Policy.
“Tamil Nadu which has grown from an agricultural State to an industrial hub should fall in line with other States and implement uniform taxation,” he said at the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of the Tamil Nadu Dyes and Chemicals Merchants Association.
Tamil Nadu was setting an example to other States in Industrial growth as five of the 17 economic clusters in the country were present here providing innumerous employment opportunities and favourable atmosphere for entrepreuners.
Presenting the ‘Rasayan Ratna’ Award to the chairman of Sanmar Group of Companies N Shankar for his contribution to the chemical trade in the State, he said Indian Companies had to strive to live up to global standards and quality.
“Indian manufacturing companies need to improve their technology and processes to match global benchmarks and face the competitive pressures which are emerging in terms of cost, quality and imports,” he added.
Acceptin the award, Shankar said that the chemicals industry in Tamil Nadu would continue to adapt itself to the changing scenario as it had done in the past and expand its horizon.
Tamil Nadu Dyes and Chemical Merchants Association president Goutham Chand Mehta said that the $28 billion chemical industry which contributed to six percent of India’s GDP was all set to reach the $100 billion mark by 2010. “No where in the world is there a virgin market like that in India and so this market must be protected against global exploitation,” he added.
