| Teamwork
to the fore: |
| Chemplast lifts KSCA trophy |
| Team work and team spirit helped a young Chemplast
team win the KSCA trophy. Their star batsmen Dinesh Mongia and Jacob
Martin were doing national duty in Sri Lanka when the All India KSCA
Diamond Jubilee tournament was held at Bangalore in August this year.
Chemplast won the trophy in 1997 and were runners-up last year. |
| Left arm spinner R Ramkumar took 7 for 98 against
BPL in the first match of the tournament. In a thrilling semifinal,
Chemplast defeated star studded Karnataka who had Anil Kumble, Sunil
Joshi, Vijay Bharadwaj and David Johnson in their ranks. Helped by
a brilliant 158 by Vijay Bharadwaj, Karnataka amassed 365 for 9 in
the allotted 90 runs. Top order batsmen S Badrinath (102) Sujith Somasundar
(92) and Aditya Srikkanth (43) fashioned a challenging reply, but
Chemplast fell short by 16 runs. In the second innings restricted
to 40 overs Chemplast bundled out KSCA for 177 through by some inspired
bowling by medium pacer L Balajee (5/61) and Ramkumar (5/79). Needing
195 for victory Chemplast were tottering at 127 for seven at the end
of 31 overs. Ramkumar and T R Arasu then batted heroically and Chemplast
snatched a thrilling victory with nine balls to spare. |

| In the final against Roofit Mumbai –
Roofit were cruising along merrily at one stage (203/2) but
young Balajee broke the back of the middle order by picking
up five wickets for 36 runs in a destructive spell. Roofit were
all out for 263 and Balajee had impressive figures of seven
for 73 from 24.3 overs. Chemplast in reply fell short by 14
runs. In the second essay Roofit found Balajee too hot to handle
again and crumbled to 141 all out from a comfortable position
(101 for 2 of 12 overs). Chasing 156 for victory, Chemplast
romped home after initial hiccups, with Ajay Kudua (50) and
Jinju Joseph (63) who batted well. |
| Ramkumar’s all round abilities and Balajee’s
fast medium bowling (21 wickets) were a revelation. J Harish,
Aditya Srikkanth, Jinju Joseph showed a lot of promise. |
