Milestones
1919
When the world was laying down arms, SNN Sankaralinga Iyer and Pichuammal celebrated the birth of their first son, K S Narayanan (KSN), in Kallidaikurichi, Tirunelveli District, Tamil Nadu.
1936
KSN married Madhuram when he was barely sixteen, and she fourteen. Later that year, he joined Indo-Commercial Bank, promoted by his father at that time, directly after leaving school. KSN came into association with T S Narayanaswami who was then the agent of the bank.
1937
KSN was appointed agent of the Palghat branch of Indo-Commercial Bank.
1938-1939
KSN took over a printing ink factory and learning his first lessons in keeping customers satisfied. KSN was able to widen his exposure by visiting his father’s salt pans periodically.
1940
The South India Rubber Factory, a regular rubber establishment, found itself in trouble, and KSN took over the company and turned it around. Soon, he started making plastics in the same factory, catering to the needs of the time: wartime soldiers’ identification badges, once made out of brass, were now urgently required in a cheaper material. South India Rubber Factory was later renamed Nanco Rubber Works (Nanco was the shorter version of Narayanan Company).
1943
KSN took over a carbide factory (Industrial Chemicals) and turned it into a profitable company, despite encountering the most daunting problems.
1945
His son N Sankar was born.
1946
KSN sold Nanco Rubber Works to some of his friends. Though KSN originally contemplated making tennis balls, it was the new management which actually took up the activity and sold Nanco tennis balls. Sankaralinga Iyer started a cement factory, India Cements, and KSN joined him.
1947
The assignment took him on a training stint to Denmark - the beginning of a long association with that country. He also travelled to other countries like the UK, Norway and Sweden to pick up additional expertise in printing and calcium carbide technology and Egypt to study cement manufacturing technology.
1950
Second son N Kumar was born.
1962
