| A Sanmar star |
| at the cricket World Cup |
| S Ramesh, the 23-year old left handed opening
batsman who made a sensational start in his Test career, with
a string of good scores against Pakistan and Sri Lanka, opens
the innings for Chemplast Sanmar and Jolly Rovers in local competition.
Ramesh is a gifted young batsman with a superb sense of timing
and a wonderful temperament ideally suited to handle the pressures
of international cricket. In Test cricket, he has really come
through a baptism of fire, confidently stroking his way against
the formidable Pakistani pace attack comprising Wasim Akram,
Waqar Younis, Shoaib Akhtar, Azhar Mehmood and the world class
spin of Saqlain Mushtaq. In Sri Lanka, he made his maiden Test
century in only his third Test match, thus laying to rest any
doubts about his ability to play long innings. |
|
|
| Experts are of the opinion that Ramesh needs to
improve his footwork if he is to do well overseas. With his intelligence
and willingness to learn, it seems only a matter of time before Ramesh
makes the necessary adjustments to his technique. |
| Ramesh hails from a family of cricketers. Two of
his brothers are active in domestic cricket. One of them, Mahesh,
is a fast medium bowler who plays for Tamil Nadu in the Ranji Trophy
and is shaping into a fine all rounder. The brothers are known for
their sense of humour and ready wit. An example is the following conversation
between Ramesh and a Tamil Nadu team mate on the eve of a match against
Bengal. |
| Friend: “Ramesh, if Bengal’s Devang
Gandhi gets a big score in this match, he could challenge you for
a place in the Indian team.” |
| Ramesh: “The way you guys are bowling, why
Devang Gandhi, even Mahatma Gandhi could get a big score against us.”
|
| On this happy note, we sign off, wishing Ramesh
a bright future in Test cricket and a successful World Cup campaign. |
